The International Year of Shelter for the Homeless

1. International Year of Shelter for the Homeless (1987) -

The International Year of Shelter for the Homeless (IYSH) was recognized in 1987 by the United Nations.The main aim is improving shelter / housing for the poor and not just homeless people. 




2. International literacy year(1990)-

The year 1990 was proclaimed as the International Literacy Year by the General Assembly in December 1987.The subject of International Literacy Year is a very vital and urgent one for society. The goal of the Year is to highlight the global effort that is being made to meet basic learning needs and provide an education for all.


3. International Space year(1992)-

The International Space Year was 1992. First proposed by US Senator Spark Matsunaga, the designation of 1992 as International Space Year was endorsed by 18 national and international space agencies, who also proposed the year's theme, "Mission to Planet Earth". Eventually, 29 national space agencies and 10 international organizations took part in coordinated activities to promote space exploration and the use of sustainable technology on Earth.


4. International Year of Indigenous People(1993)-

The UN General Assembly had proclaimed 1993 the International Year of the World's Indigenous People, and the same year, the Assembly proclaimed the International Decade of the World's Indigenous People, starting on 10 December 1994.

5. International Year of Family(1994)-

The year 1994 was proclaimed the International Year of the Family by the United Nations General Assembly. Its objectives are promoted by the United Nations Program on the Family.


6. International Year of Crystallography(2014)-

The International Year of Crystallography (IYCr2014) is an event promoted in the year 2014 by the United Nations to celebrate the centenary of the discovery of X-ray crystallography and to emphasize the global importance of crystallography in human life.


7. International Year of Small Island Developing States(2014)-

International Year of Small Island Developing States launched. 2014 is dedicated to the United Nations' International Year of Small Island Developing States (SIDS).SIDS are low-lying coastal countries that tend to share similar sustainable development 
challenges, including small but growing populations, limited resources, remoteness, susceptibility to natural disasters, vulnerability to external shocks, excessive dependence on international trade, and fragile environments.

8. International Year of Tolerance(1995)-

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 1995 the United Nations Year for Tolerance with UNESCO as the lead organization.


9. International Year of Ocean(1998)-

1998 is the International Year of the Ocean (YOTO), by declaration of the United Nations.The purpose of YOTO is to promote public awareness and understanding of the oceans, a dominant aspect of the environment.


10. International Year of Aging(older) people(1999)-

United Nations General Assembly decided to declare 1999 as the International Year of Older Persons. The proclamation was launched on 1 October 1998, the International Day of Older  Persons, by United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan
.
